The degree is where data structures, database design, operating systems and AI principles stopped being abstractions, and the reason I can reason about a Flutter app's behaviour rather than just its output.

The programme covers software architecture and object-oriented design, data structures and algorithms, relational database systems, operating systems and the principles behind artificial intelligence. What makes it worth more than a transcript is that I have been building commercially the whole way through — so every concept arrived with somewhere to put it.

Object-oriented design stopped being a diagram exercise when the Smart Car Parking System needed inheritance hierarchies that actually held up. Database systems became real when Tripline's Postgres schema needed row-level security. The degree supplies the theory; the work supplies the pressure test.

What I took from it

Four things the degree actually gave me

Design that survives change

Inheritance, composition and separation of concerns — chosen because of what the code has to do next, not because a pattern has a name.

Data modelled properly

Normalisation, indexing and query cost — the reason Tripline's schema enforces access at the row level instead of trusting the client.

What the machine is doing

Processes, memory and scheduling. Knowing this is what turns "the app feels slow" into a specific, fixable cause.

AI as a component

Enough of the principles to treat a model as one part with a latency budget and a failure mode — not a black box that always answers.
